At the end of November I had the opportunity to do some professional development and took a wedding planning course! This means that I am now a certified wedding planner!

Even though Divine Details is not a wedding planning company, this course has given us insight to better help brides plan a flawless "I  DO!".

The picture on the left hand side is our company values. The reason why I am sharing this with you is because these values have a triple meaning. Our companies values not only represent what we believe as a companies but also my values as a person and it just so happens that most of these values give significance to maintaining a successful marriage.

Mobile adoption is changing the way your customers interact with you, purchase from you, and search for your business. According to the UN, six of the world's seven billion people have a mobile phone. By 2017, 52% world's population will have a smartphone. What's more, 91% of North Americans have their mobile device within reach 24/7 and they are checking their phones an average of 150x a day! Even with this compelling evidence, the vast majority of business websites are still not mobile friendly. This is not only causing a headache for users but also a loss in business opportunity.

We are going to explain why having a responsive website is so critical to your marketing and some key considerations to keep in mind when designing a responsive website.

Mobile Usage is Exploding

 - Over 20% of Google searches are being performed on mobile devices and 25% of Internet users only access the Internet via a mobile device.
 - 90% of smartphone searches results in a purchase or a visit to a business.
 - 61% of visitors will return to Google to find a site that IS easily readable and users will have a better opinion of the brands when they offer a good mobile experience.
 - 62% of companies that designed a website specifically for mobile had increased sales.

Responsive is Preferred by Search Engine Optimization
There's no denying that search engine optimization is still an important part of any marketing approach. Google is still the dominant search engine and it recommends responsive website design. A single responsive website is more effective than two company websites, with one regular and a mobile version. The reason is that with responsive you only gave one URL, which makes it easier for the Googlebot to crawl and properly index your site.

Positive User Experience
When browsing a responsive website with your mobile device you don't have to waste time with zooming, shrinking, and pinching the screen. The site automatically adjusts to your screen size. The simplified reading and navigation drastically improves the usability of your site. According to Google's Think Insights on Mobile, there is a 61% chance that users abandon sites that are difficult to use. Guess where they end up? At your competitor's site. That being said, if the prospect is pleased with the usability of your mobile-friendly site, there is a 67% chance they will buy a product or use your service.

Loading Times
Loading an unresponsive website on a mobile device can take ages (at least that's how long it feels like it takes) - 66% of smartphone and tablet users are frustrated with page load times and usually give up and go to another website. Standards recommend that content above the fold of a mobile device loads under 1 second in order to avoid users getting frustrated and surfing away. Responsive website architecture helps speed up load times across a wide variety of platforms.

Adapts to Future Devices
One of the biggest benefits of responsive web design is it's flexibility. Not only will it adapt to all of the tablets and smartphones currently in the market, but you'll never have to worry about how things will look six months or two years down the road. Responsive web design adapts to the size of screen, not the requirements of a specific device, so no matter how big or small the screen is, your site will always look great.

Responsive design is the real deal. It's a legitimate attempt to address the massive challenge of delivering great experience to this explosion of device and browsers. having a mobile-friendly website is no longer a nice feature - it's a critical part of your marketing plan.

Earlier this month we held our 12th annual Divine Details Bridal Show at the Portuguese Club in Chatham. It is crazy to look back and think that I planned my first bridal show event 2 years ago. The Chatham Bridal Show will always hold a special place in my heart for many reasons.  This is where I discovered a passion I never imagined I would find before and learned a lot about myself. This particular bridal show is so special to me because I felt a level of success and accomplishment that I was so lucky and grateful to have the opportunity to do early on in my career. I will never forget this feeling and cannot wait to feel it again. I have been reading a lot of quotes lately about life, love and success and have come to realize that something as small as a well thought out sentence can change your entire perspective or give you the motivation you need to keep going. Here are some of my favourite quotes and images from our Chatham Bridal show!

For when I look back and remember that at one point this used to be my greatest accomplishment - "A great accomplishment shouldn't be the end of the road, just the starting point for the next leap forward."

For my best friends who willingly get up at 5 a.m. to come to my bridal shows with me - "As you learn who you are, you can better surround yourself with friends who make you a better person, and that sometimes only happens when you disassemble old relationships."

For my best friends who also put up with my worst mood when one of my shows ends up getting cancelled due to a snowstorm (They even helped me push my car out of the snow when I was too stubborn to turn around - Snowbank-1, Meg-0). - "A Friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future and accepts you just the way you are."

Wait, so the bridal show is actually cancelled today?
For my co-workers who volunteer their time and give up their Sunday's to help me - "Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful."

For my co-workers who have also become great friends of mine - "Behind every successful women is her best friend giving her crazy ideas."

For my vendors who inspire me to become a successful entrepreneur - "It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you're not."

For my vendors who are extremely talented - "You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."

Photo credit of all images: Adam from Lighten Up Photography!
For all of the people who help bring the show together to make it successful (Can't do it alone!) - "Success happens when you go out of your comfort zone."

For a family that is always there for me and still support me - The Gordon's - "When everything goes to hell, the people who stand by you without flinching, they are your family."

For myself - "To start living the life she imagined she believed she could, so she did. And she replaced the fear of the unknown with curiosity."

Greetings!

Yesterday, our team had the incredible honour of traveling up to Deer Creek Golf Resort just outside of Toronto to participate in the first ever One Spark Charity Golf Tournament with numerous friends, family, supporters and volunteers.

It was a monumental day for many reasons - the most important being that One Spark (www.one-spark.ca) is a brand new charity that has an incredible mission of creating a world where no woman faces financial barriers to living a life without violence.  This organization is driven by incredible volunteers, an immensely talented Board of Directors and one of the most passionate Executive Directors you could ever meet - Corrie Schneider.  The collective efforts of these people made the first every event for this organization and incredible success...both on the course and off of it as every aspect of the day could not have been planned better.

Though attending the tournament was an amazing experience in and of itself, it was also a monumental day because CCI Studios was very proud to be the Title Sponsor of the event.  It was an incredible opportunity to support a growing organization and to actively participate in an event where the awareness that was spread and the funds that were raised will directly go toward providing opportunities for women to remove themselves from violent situations.

At the outset of the evening, One Spark shared a video they had put together combining the use of the hashtag #WhyIStayed, which is used by women who have been in violent situations to share the reasons why they were not able to leave, with pictures of the participating golfers:

After this video was shared, I had the humbling opportunity to say a few words to the room about why CCI Studios chose to sponsor this organization and, more importantly, explain #WhyIPlayed and I would like to share my message with you now:

When I was in Grade 1, my teacher, Mrs. Hardy, gave us a homework assignment to go home that evening and write down a list of all of the rules in our house.  So, I got home that night and asked my Dad, "Dad, can you tell me all of the rules of our house?".

Without hesitating, my Dad looked at me and said "Son, our house is based off of common sense.  You do things because it is the right thing to do.  If you do not work hard in school, you will not get good grades.  If you are not active and take care of yourself, you will get sick.  If you are not kind to others, you will not live in a world where others are kind to you.  Our house is based on common sense actions."  After a brief pause, he looked at me and said, "but, we do have one single rule.  Don't you ever, ever, EVER...hit your mother".

It may seem like a small exchange between father and son, but this moment in my life is a vivid memory that I know was an instant when I had learned an incredible life lesson.  Not only was this the exact moment when I knew that violence against women would never be tolerated, but that lesson has been at the core of the relationships I have had with women throughout my life - and it all started with a simple conversation as a child.

I share this story with you because I do not have direct experience with violence against women.  I cannot claim to relate what a women in that situation goes through - but that does mean that I cannot be a part of solution.  We do not have to be reactive to fix a violent situation after it has begun, we can all be proactive and educate, teach, inspire and be models for those in our lives as how to live a life without violence.

And the hope that collectively, we can all contribute to erasing violence against women through our everyday actions is exactly #WhyIPlayed.

CCI Studios has already pledged to be back as the Title Sponsor in 2015 and we will not only work towards supporting this day again next year, but are committed to taking steps everyday until then to eliminate violence against women in our world.

Congratulations to One Spark on a great event and we look forward to standing side-by-side with you for as long as it takes to make your vision a reality.

Good Times.

Scott

If you have met our whole team or even just a few of us, I am sure you'll get a good laugh after viewing the first shirt we launched from our CCI clothing line! Even though it is not official, I am calling it a clothing line because I would also love a Good Times Shirt! *HINT*

All jokes aside, our company culture here at CCI Studios is the reason we stay so passionate at what we do. We are a team of young professionals that love being creative, having good times and working with like-minded business people. I am making this a short post because we are off to the Sarnia Connects Golf Tournament! #GoodTimes

"The role of a creative leader is not to have all the ideas; it's to create a culture where everyone can have ideas and feel that they're valued". - Ken Robinson. In other words, thanks for the new shirts Scott!

Last week I started training with our newest Account Manager.  I always get a little nervous before training someone new, I want to be sure I don't miss any details and explain things in an interesting way so that it is an exciting process.

My nerves quickly turn into excitement as soon as I start training and simply sharing the history of our company, our Vision, Mission and Values.  As cheesy as it sounds, I really love what I do and the company I work for.  As I review our company history and the path we have been on over the last 11 years, I feel so proud to be a part of the CCI Studios team!

I think what excites me most about reviewing our company foundation with new employees, is that while we continue to grow and advance, we still dedicate so much time and attention to reviewing, refining and perfecting what we do and the way we do it.  And, the reason we apply so much energy into our process is because we want to continue to offer our clients great experiences with quality finished products.

Adding a new member to our team and reviewing our continually advancing processes and procedures reminds me of our origins and the growth we have seen throughout our history.  On a day to day basis it can sometimes be difficult to realize the positive impacts of the small changes that take place, but when you have an opportunity to look back and reflect on the bigger picture of the last few years, you can see how our efforts have brought us to where we are today.

It is a bittersweet time for me, as I train a new Account Manager to work with some of my existing clients and work on tying up any loose ends before I begin my maternity leave.  I am so excited to become a mom and have some time at home with my baby but I am also a little nervous about stepping back from my career for awhile.  I am only nervous because it will be a change for me as the team we currently have continues to impress me with their intelligence, innovation and ability to work together to meet our clients needs.  I hope to keep my hand on the pulse of our company while I am off and look forward to a fresh new chapter when I head back to work in the new year.

We are a growing creative agency, operating in an industry that is always advancing, which makes it an extremely exciting industry to be a part of.  Marketing demands that its professionals are always sharpening their skills.  For this reason, when we interview a new candidate for any area of the company, we always ask them what they are doing to continually stay on top of industry trends.

Some people are unsure how to answer this question, which I find a little disheartening.  Very often they first tell us how passionate they are about their career path but then are unable to share specific tools they use to exercise their passion on a regular basis, there is a disconnect for me here.

If you consider yourself passionate about the way you make your living, I believe your career would be a very big part of your life and thus integrated into everything, not just 9am - 5pm.  We want each team member to have passion for their area of expertise, from the President, to designers, janitors, developers and administrators, we want people who live their lives and complete their work with purpose and passion.

So maybe you'er not quite sure where to start to continue your learning.  Here are a few things I find useful for staying on top of my game.

I have a few mentors, these individuals are like friends who guide me through my professional and personal experiences, they act as sounding boards when I have ideas and are excellent about giving honest feedback.  Mentors may not always tell you what you want to hear but in my experience, its always what you need to hear.

Find some professionals in your field with great online resources and interaction.  I follow one sales professional, Paul Castain, who offers written resources on his website and podcasts that are packed with useful information.

Follow some people in your industry on social media, they will share information that is valuable to you and could potentially lead you to more resources, courses and groups within your areas of interest.

Most of all, make it fun.  The people and places where I source my professional resources from, also share some of my personal passions.  For example, Sandi Krakowski is a marketing mogul, she shares information about social engagement and does so while speaking about her faith and the positive impact it has had on her personal and career life.

When I began to merge the various interest in my life, I started to discover all the opportunities I had to advance my skills and live and work with passion!  I would love to know some of your strategies for staying fresh in your field, please feel free to share.

Can you smell the sweat and sunscreen?

I know I can! So many concert and festival lineups have been announced recently that its making me get really excited for summer... and I guess nice weather too.

Here are some of the festivals that I will be attending this year:
Get The Ball Rolling, Summer Never EndsRiot Fest (Toronto), Edgefest 2, and Chill On The Hill. With a maybe on Rockfest in Quebec.

I always love the atmosphere at these festivals, everyone is there to listen to awesome bands/artists and have a good time. You will meet many awesome people that are there for the whole experience, like last year my friends and I had a campsite beside a couple from Norway. They saw the lineup on Facebook and thought it would be cool to attend so they planned a tour of Canada around it.
Get ready to experience some of the greasiest and best food, if you don't mind the half hour - an hour wait in line. Also, if you are looking for shade after being out in the sun for a few hours, good luck finding some without it just filled with people.

If you are a concert goer, you already have an idea of what to prepare for at these types of events. But, if you are new to this, here are some simple and kinda obvious things to bring with you.

Sunscreen – It took me longer to learn this than I am proud of to admit, and if you think you won't get a sunburn, you will be that extremely burnt person.

Dress for the weather – I don't know how people can wear jeans and black shirts all day at these shows without passing out. My recommended clothing is tank top, shorts, and a decent pair of shoes that you won't care if they get ruined.

What if it rains? I honestly still don't know how to prepare for rain.

Sunglasses – The sun is bright.

Water – The usual bottle of water is around $5 at these show, so bring your own.

Money – Chances are you are going to be there all day and the food at these concerts is unreal and can be kinda expensive.

Mosh Pit Etiquette:
If you find yourself near or in a mosh pit, here are some simple, unspoken rules:
1. Be prepared to be pushed , shoved, and tossed. Don't go in expecting those things aren't going to happen, that would be bad.
2. If someone falls you pick them up, everyones there to have fun and not to get hurt.
3.
Don't pull, push, or drag someone into the pit if they don't want to. If they wanted to be in, they would already have joined.
4. No cheap shots.
5. Just be aware of your surroundings, be smart, and you might survive.
(Also keep in mind that a mosh pit can start up anywhere, not just at the front of the crowd.)

If the festival is a multi-day event and you are camping at a campsite,
I highly suggest you bring (Besides the obvious necessities like a tent, some food, drinks etc.):

Toilet Paper –  Why? Portable Toilets. Have you seen these things after a couple hours? They are disgusting, and even worse because they have been cooked all day. Plus they are probably out of the tissue paper they call toilet paper.
Body Spray/Cleaning Supplies – This is a good idea if you don't have access to a shower or proper bathroom.

Air Mattress
–  After a day of being in a crowd of thousands of people, the hard ground just doesn't seem comfy, and your body will thank you.

Games – You will probably have to wait for a shuttle to the venue, so why not pass the time by playing cards, or playing catch.

Those are just some of the things I've learned from going, but the only way to truly learn is by experiencing it for yourself!

Here at CCI we love an excuse to celebrate and we love to laugh. So, my blog post today is dedicated to all our awesome moms by giving them a shoutout and by sharing some funny Mother's Day content.

The CCI Mom Gang is always here for us from helping us make Friday morning breakfast, to occasionally stocking us up with K-Cups, to even lending a hand at some of our events.  Your support does not go unnoticed and we love that you still help us shine even as adults. Not only individually, but as a company we are pretty darn lucky to have some cool moms hangin' around.

Don't say we never get you anything, here are some pretty nifty "e-cards" especially for you. I don't know if the whole CCI team would pick these ones out, but they sure made me chuckle - then again, if I had it my way there would be a lot more cheesy marketing coming out of this office!

Ok, if those didn't cut it, I really think these videos will help us express our gratitude and give you a good laugh.

First, Lululemon's #appreciatetheMOMent video. From Mom impressions to confessions, this video might make you laugh and tear up at the same time. We think the world of our moms and wouldn't be able to tackle the world without them #warriormom #lioness #badassmoms

Next, you gotta check out this Mom Rap from #Fiat. Although I am not a mother, I imagine most of these could be relatable, PLUS we totally picture our moms as hardcore, tough as nails mothers.

Lastly, #kidpresident will make you feel all warm and fuzzy with his insightful comments into how much we love our moms. MOM upside down is WOW!

Thanks to all the wonderful moms out there! And special thank you and lots of love to our ROCKSTAR moms!

One of the best things about my career is how many opportunities I have to meet new people, interact with them and build meaningful, mutually beneficial relationships.  I love connecting with people through realtime networking events and online via social media.

This week I attended WIN and was reminded that the relationships I have formed with the women of this group, are not only valuable to my professional life but also to my personal life.  At 22 weeks pregnant my bump is now clearly visible for all to see, the women of WIN congratulated me on this next chapter of my life and continued to share their experiences as mothers.  I received advice, encouraging words and even some honest stories of trials or failures from mothers who were working to balance a thriving career and a growing family.

I left the meeting feeling grateful for all the advice that had been offered and for my relationships with these women.  Networking allows us to share our skills, passions and stories and I believe that if we are honest in the way that we share with others, there are always opportunities to build relationships that allow you to create real connections.

Thanks to the WIN ladies for inspiring me with your passion for your career endeavours and now for your support as I become a mom.

I would love to know your thoughts on networking and the value you have seen in your career/life from this activity.

Nike Free 5.0 w/ Swarovski Rhinestones
After a harsh winter and a spring where you can get frostbite and sunburnt in the same week, one of the things I am most excited for is shopping for my summer 2014 wardrobe. In this blog post I will share with you some of my favourite summer trends and what items I will be on the hunt for this season!

The first item on my list are these mint Nike running shoes! The picture speaks for itself right?

The Swarovski Rhinestone swoosh puts these shoes far above the cost of my yearly gym membership!

Neon Gym Attire
While we are on the topic of gym clothes, the upward trend in neon gym attire makes it almost impossible not to notice what other girls are wearing at the gym. I personally love this trend!

Women are busier than ever and finding time to go to the gym between work and play is no easy task. Companies such as Nike have quickly figured out that fashionable workout clothes fuel women to go to the gym or make time to go for a run at times when they may otherwise have not. My friends and I are not ashamed to meet up for a drink in an outfit similar to the one on the left!

Jean Jacket Over a Dress Becomes a New Look!

If you happen to be anything like me, you start thinking about what you're going to wear about 5 seconds after you make plans to do anything. Lunch with a girlfriend? Definitely wearing jeans, boots and a cute scarf. Casual Friday at the office? Can't wait to wear my new blazer!

Ever have those days where you feel like you have nothing to wear or have already worn your favourite dress what seems like every other weekend? Well played, your favourite dress has now became a casual outfit all thanks to that new jean jacket!

The newest and hottest trend right now is chevron patterned clothing! Topping the trend is the chevron print in black and white. I cannot wait to find a dress similar to the picture above on the far left. Personally, I would dress up this print with a pop of red, neon pink or highlighter yellow. If you are new to experimenting with bold prints, I would start small with the scarf in the middle! The blue strip dress on the right is not a chevron pattern but you wouldn't think twice about buying it right?

It is no surprise that the floral pattern is here to stay! I have seen some hideous floral patterns, but as you can see, when it is done right this pattern is very flattering!

Blazers are chic and can make any outfit look professional. Here are some ways to bring these summer trends to the office!

 Happy Shopping!

A new labor agreement in France means that employees must ignore their bosses’ work emails once they are out of the office and relaxing at home – even on their smartphones.

You can’t get a better excuse for ignoring your boss than “Sorry, it’s against the law.”

Thursday, April 3, 2014

I posted something on Facebook last weekend that I wouldn’t normally post – a debatable opinion. Shortly after, I decided to remove it as I remembered I liked my Facebook being limited to friends and memories. It was hard to say what I was thinking and feeling in a couple short sentences and I also did not want to offend anyone. However after I deleted it, the subject was still on my mind and I wanted to talk, rant, debate, not quite sure which about it! Well what better place than my first blog post.

The no makeup selfie became a viral fad recently and I am not a huge fan. My various reasons and thoughts towards this result from my different viewpoints on it – as a marketing professional, as a woman, and as the individual person I am. So bear with me, these thoughts may be all over the place and tangents may occur.

Although a blog post, I wanted to try to back up my statements with some “research”, which is just other peoples’ opinions on the same topic, so take it as you may. In one article, it is said that the no makeup selfie started after the Oscars, then celebrities were posting them for different causes, then the no makeup selfie for Breast Cancer started in the UK and spread to North America. It grew in popularity due to people’s involvement (duh, the very definition of viral fad). But that – peoples’ involvement – is what I want to talk about. Why get involved?

1. To support Breast Cancer

I think my feelings towards this involvement mostly come from working in the marketing industry. The possibilities are endless when it comes to marketing, so much creativity, so many different angles and avenues. Just because certain actions were successful at raising money, does not mean that that same outcome or a greater outcome could not have been achieved using a different approach. What does a no makeup selfie have to do with Breast Cancer? It supports women going through treatment? To disagree with that I will refer to this article, which says these no makeup selfies are insulting to those women going through treatment.

So were you participating to raise awareness and/or make a donation? The point of my asking is not to make people feel bad, but rather ask them to question their actions. Yes, it’s all for fun but people complain that things are losing meaning, value, tradition and we are becoming increasingly desensitized to devalued behaviour. Well then let’s not jump on the bandwagon when meaningless fads come along. The more we feed into these fads, the more they become the everyday life we live. Let’s spread awareness in other ways or make a donation without posting a no makeup selfie. We control an action becoming a viral fad.

Lastly, the reason why I care that this was the vehicle for raising awareness, is that it is Breast Cancer. An organization/cause that has worked hard to grow with respect, dignity, and gracefulness, and I think they deserve a movement with more class.

2. To show the beauty of women
A friend who commented on my post before it was removed compared the no makeup selfie to Movember, where men grow mustaches to raise awareness of prostate cancer – it’s just a fun way to get involved and raise awareness. Excellent, yes ladies let’s have some fun and raise awareness! Except… I can think of a bajillion things more fun. What makes a no makeup selfie different than a selfie and what does that imply? What [do I think] the no makeup selfie is really saying? That women are STILL trying to prove their beauty and even more disheartening, we are asking for people to validate that through “likes”. EVERYONE is beautiful. Maybe if we, women, stop asking for acceptance and just start being, then maybe people will stop thinking about it so much. Come on ladies, can we really not be more creative than the no makeup selfie? Men get to grow ridiculous moustaches, maybe making themselves look a little less appealing than their regular attractive selves, and we all have a good laugh about it. But women are still out to prove their beauty? Lame.

3. To follow the fad
Well the fad involves selfies and I am not a huge fan of those to begin with, so I will just leave this one at that. Don’t waste your time.

I thought this was an interesting topic because I caught myself thinking of different marketing campaigns and ways to get involved. Which in turn made me think it would be kinda cool to post here because one thing I love about my job is not only helping people tell their stories, but telling them in a genuine way that I believe in and is true to my character. I always feel comfortable that I can share my ideas with both my team and my clients and have never felt pressured to work in a way I feel is unethical. Oh the possibilities when thinking of marketing Breast Cancer Awareness – how could I not be frustrated with this year’s trend?

There you have it, just a little babble on this topic. Let me know what you think!

Each one of us contributes to the world we live in. Let’s demand more substance, beauty, and creativity. Good Times.
